Challenge

Design a new species of flowers for the garden show, then perform a skit about the new species.

 

Time: 7 minutes total

  • 5 minutes to make 2 new species of flowers and plan your skit
  • 2 minutes to perform your skit

 

The Challenge

It’s SPRING and time for the yearly garden show. You’ve discovered 2 new species of flowers and the garden show is where you’ll introduce them to the world. With the materials supplied make 2 new types of flowers, give them fancy names and prepare a skit showing how you’ll show off your new discovery.

 

Materials

  • 10 pieces of colored paper
  • 8 mailing labels
  • 4 pipe cleaners
  • 2 pieces of foil paper
  • 4 sticks from the yard
  • 4 paper clips

 

Included but not part of your performance: Scissors and 1 set of markers

 

Scoring: 100 points possible

  • Up to 20 points (10 point each flower) for the creativity of your newly discovered flowers
  • Up to 20 points for the creativity of the names you’ve given the flowers
  • Up to 20 points for the creativity of your performance
  • Up to 20 points for how you’ve presented the flowers during the performance
  • Up to 20 points for how well you worked together

 

Do Ahead of Time

 

Collect the following materials:

  • 10 pieces of colored paper
  • 8 mailing labels
  • 4 pipe cleaners
  • 2 pieces of foil paper
  • 4 sticks from the yard
  • 4 paper clips
  • Scissors
  • 1 set of markers

 

Set-up

Have all the materials ready on a table

 

Debrief:

After you have finished the challenge discuss the following:

  • How did you come up with the flower’s fancy names? Was it hard?
  • When you were designing your flowers, did you make them look like different?
  • What materials could you have used differently?
  • Was your performance creative? What would make it even more creative?
  • What could you do differently next time?

 

Follow Up:

  • Using the same materials, repeat the challenge after the debriefed. This gives them the opportunity to apply any corrections discussed during the debrief time.
  • Do the challenge again using different materials.
